CHAPTER 14

Sophie was happy to have her work at the bakery as a distraction for the next day. She had woken up in a rather foul mood, which she linked to her unease about the case.

“That poor Bree,” Erin said, a hint of sadness in her voice as she prepared a large bowl of puff pastry dough for the apple turnovers they would serve. “I can’t imagine what it’s like to face something like that at such a young age.”

Sophie sliced the green apple in front of her with a little more force than she usually would. She was prepping a dozen Granny Smith apples for the turnover filling. Once all the apples were sliced, she would cook them down just a bit on the stove with butter, brown sugar, and cinnamon.

“I just don’t understand,” Sophie said, shaking her head. “The knife came from the hotel’s kitchen, not Bree’s home. That would raise more suspicion. But it’s certainly possible that someone could sneak into the kitchen and grab the first knife they find.”

Erin nodded in agreement. “I bet in a bustling kitchen like that, people constantly come and go. If it were another employee who murdered that guy, they could easily slip into the kitchen without being noticed. They wouldn’t necessarily have to sneak in if they were part of the kitchen staff."

Sophie considered Erin’s point. “You’re right. It’s not unreasonable for Bree’s fingerprints to be on the knife; she spent most of her time in the kitchen. Just because her prints are on the knife doesn’t mean she was necessarily holding it when Gordon was stabbed.”

Erin used a rolling pin to roll out the puff pastry dough and then started folding it onto itself several times.

“That’s what I was thinking,” she said. “I also thought it sounded like someone is intentionally framing Bree.”

Sophie paused as she reached for another apple. “So, you think someone might be setting her up?"

Erin nodded. “It makes sense. I mean, consider what you’ve just said. You mentioned the other day that Bree was publicly shamed at work. Seeking revenge for that could potentially be a motive.”

Sophie’s mind was racing. “Yes,” she said slowly. “From what I understand, that’s the main reason the police suspected her initially. Everyone knew that Gordon bullied Bree.”

“Isn’t it coincidental that Bree’s fingerprints were found on the knife from Frasier’s kitchen?” Erin turned to Sophie, her eyebrows furrowed in thought. “I mean, saying all this out loud, it seems like the evidence is stacked against Bree. But if she’s innocent, like you think she is, it’s a huge coincidence that all this evidence would show up the way it did.”

Erin opened a drawer and took out a pastry dough cutter. While the assistant cut pieces of the puff pastry for the turnovers, Sophie added the apple slices to a pre-warmed skillet on the stove.

She stirred the apple slices with a wooden spoon and thought about what Erin was saying.

“You know, I think you’re onto something there. Being in the thick of things made me feel like Bree was just a victim of unfortunate circumstances.
